Principles and Promises // Ephesians 6:2-3
Ephesians 6:2-3 (NIV) | “Honor your father and mother”—which is the first commandment with a promise — “so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.”
Today’s verse from Ephesians 6:2-3 echoes the 10 Commandments. Paul pointed out that the first Commandment given by God that came with a promise is to honor one’s parents. This doesn’t mean we always like or approve what they say or do, but it reminds us to love those who loved us first…even before we knew what love was. It also doesn’t mean that our parents lack responsibility, because Paul instructed parents not to act in such a way that exasperates their children. It’s so beautiful to think about the 10 Commandments relationally, because God gave them to us so we can learn how to do life with Him and the people He places in our lives. We are all interconnected and need one another. Sometimes we get it right and sometimes we get it wrong. Regardless, we are called to honor one another, love one another, and live in such a way that reflects God’s will for us all. These principles and promises will make an eternal difference today!
