On Sabbath Keeping // Genesis 2:2-3

God never tires, so why did God need to rest? It is about establishing a rhythm of rest to protect against fatigue! The idea of the Sabbath is a gift of God to us acknowledging our need to get away from the busyness of life to create margin for us to pray and play. Those two activities help us connect with God and the people He’s given us to do life with, both of which provide nourishment to the soul. I love what writer Eugene Peterson wrote about the rhythm of Sabbath keeping, “If you keep the Sabbath, you start to see creation not as somewhere to get away from your ordinary life, but a place to frame an attentiveness to your life.” That’s exactly what God wants from us! You might be inclined to see you can’t afford to take the time away from your responsibilities, but God wants you to know you can’t afford not to. Yes, it might be hard, but establishing and keeping the rhythm is far easier than fighting off burnout and depression.
