The Light of the World // John 8:12

I wear today’s verse on my left shoulder and will the rest of my life. This is the verse that helped me navigate my darkest time after Mia died. A friend brought a birthday card Mia wrote in where she miswrote her name (I AM) and drew a sun. I thought of Jesus’ words about being the Light of the World as soon as I saw it. It gave me hope then, just as it does today, that I need not stay in the darkness even when darkness comes.

Jesus’ earthly ancestor, King David, wrote these words we know as Psalm 23:4, “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me” (NKJV). This is God’s promise that spans across time. The Lord is Light and is with us, even when we walk through the valley of the shadow of death. But here’s some good news: you cannot have a shadow without a light! Turn toward that light, face the Lord, and trust Him to lead you through it fearlessly. He is there with you, protecting you against predators with His rod and guiding you with His staff. And the best part is He need not carry a lantern because He IS Light incarnate AND promises to be with you forever!
