Greater // 1 John 4:4

1 John 4:4 (NIV) | You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.

Today’s verse comes in a section where the Bible warns against the devil and his minions. One of the ways evil works is it tries to overwhelm you, thinking the battle is lost. This is a big part of deception that tries to trick you into thinking evil is bigger and more powerful than it is. Now don’t get me wrong, it can be quite dispiriting and disconcerting. I feel it every time I turn on the news. But does that mean the spirit of evil is greater then the Spirit of God? Absolutely not! Today’s verse reminds us that the one who is in us is greater than the one in the world. That one is none other than the Holy Spirit who comes to live within us when we accept Jesus as Lord and Savior of our lives. The Spirit is indeed greater, so don’t allow the devil’s trickery to convince you otherwise. Satan will try to overwhelm you, but Jesus is the overcomer. After all, remember these poignant words: “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world” (John 16:33).
