Foolish? // Proverbs 3:7
Proverbs 3:7 (NIV) | Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and shun evil.
Does this verse seem like a bit of a contradiction to you? Wisdom is something the Bible teaches us to seek. So why does God say for us not to be wise in our own eyes? That’s because we tend to be drawn to things that are foolish. Think about the hysteria over some recent fads that turned out to not just be bogus, but harmful. God doesn’t want us to seek wisdom from an earthly point of view, but an eternal one. Consider what 1 Corinthians 1:27 says, “God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong” (NIV). So, when you’re confused or tempted by the next too-good-to-be-true pop culture psychobabble, remember today’s verse. Fear the Lord and shun evil. To do otherwise is, in a word, foolish.
