World Laughter Day // Psalm 126:1-2

Today is World Laughter Day. I’m sure you know that laughter is the best medicine. I think about that in terms of a string of absolutely crazy things that happened to our family dating back almost six months now. We’ve had thing after thing happen from appliances going belly-up, car troubles, health issues, HOA write-ups, unexpected bills, and even one of our cats catching fire (no kidding…good news he is just fine). We got to a point where all we could do was laugh with each additional thing. If laughter is the best medicine, then it also stands to reason that we laugh to keep from crying.

Have you ever gone through such a series of events? The people of Israel sure did! Some of it was just stuff that happened, while others were self-inflicted problems. That brings a unique perspective to our verse for the day where we read about the people dreaming their problems would be solved, and laughing with surprise when they finally were. Their surprise turned into the story they had to share about how God was with them through it all.

The same is true for you and me. Yes, there are times we laugh to keep from crying, and times we know laughter is the best medicine. Whether we laugh in surprise, relief, or whatever, we need to remember that laughter is good for the soul. So, regardless where you are on the calamity continuum, dream about where you want to be with the Lord, laugh, sing, and share about how God has done great things in the good days, bad days, and every day in-between.
