Weary? // Galatians 6:10
Today’s verse needs to be read in context with verse 9 as well: “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.”
It’s easy for us to get tired and weary from doing good, isn’t it? This is especially true when we perceive our good efforts go unnoticed or unrewarded. This can be particularly true for those who serve in the church. There is a reason the church is often seen as the front lines of spiritual warfare. We don’t want that to be the case but alas, it is. So we all must follow the Apostle Paul’s advice to not grow weary in doing good and make the best of every opportunity to do good to all people.
The next part of verse 10 can cause issues for some, though, as Paul wrote that this is especially true for those in the household of faith. This has been used by some as an excuse to not provide care for those outside of the church. The essential point Paul was making is to ensure balance between caring for those outside and inside the church as opposed to emphasizing one group at the expense of another. This need not be a contradiction, because ultimately, the goal must be to bring all people into the family of faith!
So, what can you do today to do good to all people? If you find yourself weary, may I suggest you take this day after the holiday to experience a true Sabbath? Get yourself ready before Sunday comes so you will be well positioned to serve with other believes in the family of faith and then commit your life to bringing others in as well. To God be the glory!
