Tuned to Truth // John 16:13

This coming Sunday is the Pentecost. It’s the 50 day marker from Easter and is the celebration of when the Holy Spirit descended upon the disciples. Our verse for today points to Jesus’ promise to send the Holy Spirit to guide the disciples in truth. Wow, do we need that today or what?! Our current culture is pushing virtually everything but the truth on us; in fact, that’s the point. Evil wants to distort the truth to get us to question everyone and everything we know. It’s quite insidious, isn’t it? And what makes it even worse is it works. This takes me to a little bit later in John’s Gospel in the 18th chapter when Jesus is before Pontius Pilate and Pilate asked, “What is truth?” Jesus indicated just before that rhetorical question that everyone who cares about, and has feelings for, the truth knows His voice. This means that all of us need to listen out for, and tune our lives to, the truth. That begs a question I have for you: are you listening for the truth? Are you tuning into things that direct you to the truth? If not, then you are even more susceptible to deception than you probably even know. Think again about Pilate. I think he was inclined to Jesus being the truth but still he washed his hands and listened to the clamoring of the crowd to release Barabbas and condemn the Lord to death by crucifixion. That is an indictment for many of us today. We feel the draw of the truth yet we can pay more attention to the volume of the crowd. May I encourage you today to tune your ear to the truth? Listen for Jesus’ voice as opposed to the sound of the crowd. The Holy Spirit will help you just as Jesus promised! The Holy Spirit will guide you where you can experience the truth and keep you going on the Godly path. Tune your life to the Spirit and trust what you know to be true.
