God’s True Treasure // Matthew 13:44

Matthew 13:44 (NIV) | The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field.

Banks as we know them did not exist in biblical times. People who had “treasures” would often bury them in the ground for safekeeping. Finders-keepers as we know it also did not exist in biblical times; therefore, if you happened upon treasure buried in someone field, it belonged to the landowner. So, when we read this parable, Jesus is essentially making two massive points (1) be sure to honor the owner of the treasure by doing the right thing, and (2) the treasure is worth whatever sacrifice is necessary. Of course, Jesus wasn’t referring to gold and jewels, but the Kingdom of God, which is worth far more than any sacrifice we could make. Does that mean it’s out of reach? Nope, because when we honor the owner — God — He receives our sacrifice and generously gives us everything! Jesus knew He would soon pay for our entrance into God’s Kingdom with His life and He wanted to ensure everyone had the opportunity to partake in God’s glory. I want to close with words from Ephesians 2:6-7, “And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus” (NIV). The Lord’s love, grace, and mercy in Christ Jesus is God’s true treasure!
