Tomorrow’s Focus Today // Matthew 6:34

As a worrier, I can’t think of another piece of wisdom from Jesus that impacts me daily as much as the statement in today’s verse. Holocaust survivor, Corrie Ten Boom, echoed this when she wrote, “Worry does not empty tomorrow of its sorrow. It empties today of its strength.” I imagine you know that feeling, especially when your anxiety keeps you up at night worrying about what tomorrow holds. This can be hard, but there is hope within it. Jesus told us not to worry about tomorrow all those years ago. Now that He exists outside of time and space, we can find peace in knowing He is already there, working on our behalf and in our favor. I can almost hear Him say, “Come on it, tomorrow’s fine!” But is He referencing tomorrow or today? I think the answer is, yes. We can jump into the day without worry and face the things that come our way because we do not face them alone. He will give us the wisdom and strength to tackle every problem, or the serenity to recognize there are just some things out of our control. And then, if we’re totally honest, we’ll come to realize we really have so little control over the things that happen, so why worry? Don’t let your anxiety or sorrow for what could happen tomorrow keep you from engaging with the world today. After all, the world needs you and the Lord wants you at your best. So, if you find yourself worrying about what might happen tomorrow, refocus to today since tomorrow will worry about itself. That way you can focus on each and every today you face!
