The Strong Tower // Proverbs 18:10
What do you take away from today’s verse? I find three things I want to touch on this morning. The first is that the very name of the Lord is a strong tower.
Names are very important. More so in Biblical times than today, the name of a person actually reflects their character. Solomon taught in today’s verse that the very name of God reflects salvation. We also know that God’s character is love, so we get a glimpse that the love of God is a strong tower. So what does that mean?
The idea that the name of God is a strong tower into which we can run for refuge is important. I think it prudent to mention that this doesn’t mean we won’t face difficulties, but the loving and saving character of God will never let us down eternally when our faith is in Him.
In addition to the tower being a refuge from trouble, think also about how high it could extend into the sky. This gives a better vantage point by which to see the world. Since God’s character is a rescuing love, this helps us better understand how God wants us to see the world.
Jesus proclaimed His mission statement in Luke 19:10 that the Son of Man came to seek and save the lost. Jesus Himself is that tower strong to save. He gives us the perspective we need to live loving lives even when it seems that love is in such short supply in our world. May we remember the words of Peter as recorded in Acts 4:12 as we reflect on Jesus: “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name (JESUS!!!) under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved” (NIV). The power of that name was revealed even prior to Jesus’ birth as the angel told Joseph that he was to name the infant savior, Jesus, because “he will save his people from their sins” (Matthew 1:21, NIV).
Jesus’ name is the strong tower that rises above the problems of this world. Run to Him and find your salvation. Let Him help you see the world differently. You are safe in Jesus and He is inviting you to join Him on the rescue mission for humanity. Help others know they can be, too, now and forever.
