The Slipped Slits of Sin // Galatians 6:1

I did something the other day that reminded me of a great lesson on sin. I was wearing a favorite Braves long-sleeved tee that Tiffany got for my birthday. I was holding several things and cutting open a bag of dog food. The scissors slipped and I cut two slits in the shirt. 😡

Galatians 6:1 says, “Live creatively, friends. If someone falls into sin, forgivingly restore him, saving your critical comments for yourself. You might be needing forgiveness before the day’s out” (MSG).

The idea of “falling into sin” is like a slip of the foot, or the scissors as it were. It’s unintentional and catches us off guard. The wisdom from Scripture is sin is all the same. Sin isn’t always the intentional decision to go against God’s will. Sometimes we slip in spite of our efforts or intentions, and we (or someone else) are left to deal with the fallout. As much as we may wish it so, fabric cannot be uncut. Yes, the slip-slits are still there and can serve as a reminder that creative shortcuts frequently do just that…cut.

So, what are we to do? Be mindful of the moment; be present; do your best; and if you fail — which everyone invariably will — make it right. That process begins with forgiveness for others and/or self. That process helps display the love and mercy given by God we are called to share with others.
