The House of Bread // Micah 5:2
Micah 5:2 (NIV) | “But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times.”
I have fond memories of several years back, volunteering in Mia’s classroom when they made gingerbread houses. I’ve always like gingerbread, especially at Christmastime. There’s something about the aroma and spices that fit so nicely this time of year. That also gets me thinking about the translation of the name of the town where Jesus was born, Bethlehem. Did you know it means, house of bread? The Scriptures indicate Bethlehem wasn’t all that spectacular of a town, but someone beyond spectacular would emerge from the tiny town. Jesus said in John 6:35, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.” That’s quite a powerful promise, and one that extends well beyond our holiday season, because it’s an offer that spans eternity!
