The Given Son // Isaiah 9:6

Isaiah 9:6 (NIV) | For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Yesterday we looked at the prophecy in Isaiah about Jesus came as “God with us” (Immanuel) via the virgin birth. Today’s verse shows us the prophetic words of Isaiah 9:6 that the angels echoed as the birth announcement from the heavens: “For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord” (Luke 2:11, ESV). What I find pretty cool is how we tie together the remaining points of the verses from Isaiah and Luke. Isaiah said, “the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” But Luke revealed what the angel said, “And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger” (Luke 2:12, ESV). Those who only looked for the Messiah to come as a politician, warrior, prophet, or priest likely scoffed at the idea of God showing up as a tiny infant born under seemingly scandalous circumstances, with the appearance of poverty. Still, He was the one that opened the heavens, split the way we keep time, and beckoned people from around the world to come and marvel and what took place. Friends, that is the kind of person who needs to hold our government, bring us comfort, fight our battles, and secure peace amidst our ongoing battle with the forces of evil…yes, even those within our own heart and mind. So, if you are, or ever have been guilty of mistaking the power of Christ due to the trappings of His delivery, this is the perfect time to remember He embraced the mist vulnerable form possible in order to deliver us from our own sin-riddled vulnerabilities. Praise Jesus, indeed, the Son given for you, me, and all the world!
