The Christ Hymn // Philippians 2:7-8

Today’s verse points to one of the most beautiful passages of Scripture, known as the Christ Hymn in Philippians 2:5-11. It starts with the exhortation for us to have the same mind as Jesus, or to approach the world with the same heart for others. In Jesus, God set aside His eternal glory and took on the frailty of a human form. Then, instead of exalting Himself or seeking to be worshiped as He deserved, He took the posture of a humble servant, submitting Himself to the most excruciating death humanity ever devised. As a result, we as frail humans can receive Jesus’ eternal glory, but only as a gift from the Lord! This truism was taught by Jesus Himself as recorded in Matthew 23:12, “For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted” (NIV). So, let this beautiful passage…this Christ Hymn…fill your heart with the Lord’s love; for as Psalm 40:3 indicates, it becomes music to the ears of all who need hope: “He taught me to sing a new song, a song of praise to our God. Many who see this will take warning and will put their trust in the LORD” (GNT).
