Save Us Now! // Luke 19:40
Today is National Old Rock Day, a time when we are asked to reflect upon Earth’s amazing history and the scientists who help us understand it. I want to take this another step and consider the theologians who also help us realize that though rocks might be inanimate, they are by no means bystanders to God’s plan of redemption. Romans 8:22 indicates that the Earth itself is groaning in anticipation for deliverance from the stain of sin. I think my favorite verse about rocks comes from Luke 19:40, which is the account of Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday. The pharisees wanted Jesus to tell His disciples and the gathering crowd to be quiet so as not to disturb the peace. Jesus’ awesome reply was, “I tell you, if these were silent, the very stones would cry out.” So, when we think about rocks in the world, we must remember that even they are awaiting Jesus’ return as they cry out in hope, “save us now!”
