Your Spiritual Sentry // Romans 8:6

Where is the greatest battle for your heart, soul, mind, and strength waged? Romans 8:7 says that we are not only at war with God due to our sinful nature, but we’re also actually incapable of following God’s law. Remember: God’s law is to love the Lord with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength, and to love your neighbor as you love yourself. It seems harsh to read we are incapable of doing this on our own, doesn’t it? This is why today’s verse from Romans 8:6 is so important! If we are left to our own devices, we will succumb to our own vices. We need to ask God into our lives so His Holy Spirit can become the governor of our lives. Proverbs 4:23 cautions us to guard the heart and mind because that is from where our life flows. In Christ, however, we read this gem from Philippians 4:7, “And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” If we give our life to the Lord, He is the sentry that helps to stand guard over our vulnerabilities. I don’t know about you, but that’s very comforting. Again, we fall victim to our vices when left to our own devices. That was never God’s plan, which is why we have the power of the Spirit, bringing peace to the internal battlefield where the war is waged between God and self. Will you surrender to God today? Will you allow His power to protect and preserve you? Trust Spirit to govern your heart and mind so you can find the peace that stands guard and keeps watch over you now and forever.
