Give Something Away Day // Romans 13:8

You probably know by now I’m a sucker for the special days and observances. The first one I see for today is it’ “Be A Dork Day.” Since some might look at me and say, “yeah, well, it ends in a ‘Y,’” I also wanted to look at another day. It is also, if you didn’t know, “Give Something Away Day.” Jesus Himself said it’s better to give than receive (Acts 20:35); therefore, generosity is inextricably linked with Christianity. I am reminded of the epic Oscar Hammerstein quote, “A bell’s not a bell ’til you ring it – A song’s not a song ’til you sing it – Love in your heart wasn’t put there to stay – Love isn’t love ’til you give it away!” Ultimately, we are considering the nature of things, and using them according to their purpose. This must be love for the Jesus; after all Jesus said His commandment for us us to love one another.

When I look at today’s verse from Roman’s 13:8, we know we can run low on just about everything in life. The Apostle Paul’s advice is to never run low on love, knowing that’s the only thing we owe one another. Jesus came to pay all of our debts, but He wants us to continue to live with love as our focus, always looking to go above and beyond. In other words, we are called to use our lives in the service of love with interest, always giving more than we receive.

How does this strike you on this “Give Something Away Day”? How will you observe it today? What do you have that you can show someone how important they are to you, and how important God is as well? Let’s do that.
