Purpose Beyond the Pain // 2 Corinthians 4:16

Yesterday we looked at how the Bible teaches that we become closer than friends when we face life’s hardships. The Apostle Paul knew all about that, which gives us some context into today’s verse. Let’s read the verse contextually and in full, “Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal” (2 Corinthians 4:16-18, NIV). There are two things I want to briefly consider. The first is how Paul used language to indicate he was not in those struggles alone. We all need battle buddies that become spiritual siblings. The second point is he never lost his perspective amidst his difficulties. He knew what he was facing was only temporary and the eternal payoff would be out of this world! So, if you find yourself enduring trials right now, follow Paul’s lead: (1) don’t go through them alone, and (2) remember your troubles (though they might be all-consuming) are only temporary. Hold fast to the promise our good Lord has a purpose for you beyond the pain. Trust that. Trust God.
