Where is Your Focus? // Psalm 27:4

This week we have looked at a few verses that deal with managing adversity. We’ve considered how our troubles forge deep relationships so we don’t go through them alone, and how critically important it is for us to maintain perspective. Today’s verse from Psalm 27:4 gives us another unique idea that carries these concepts further. David wrote the 27th Psalm while he was in the wilderness fleeing his enemies. The psalm begins with these words, “The Lord is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life—of whom shall I be afraid?” David went on to write about his focus, which is what we see in verse 4: “One thing I ask from the Lord, this only do I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze on the beauty of the Lord and to seek him in his temple.” The guidance we see here is we must develop a laser focus on God, who helps us gain perspective, and gives us friends who become spiritual siblings. David’s focus was not on his troubles, but on the One who is above them all. That’s what we need ourselves, isn’t it? It’s simple, but not easy. So, whatever you might be facing today, don’t let it shift your focus unless you aren’t focused on God. Let the light of God illuminate the things that deserve and direct your focus, beginning with Him!
