Poor in Spirit // Matthew 5:3

This week we are going to take a quick journey through the Beatitudes, which kick off Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount. We read that those who are poor in spirit are blessed because they are welcome into God’s Kingdom. The junk of life often leaves us feeling discouraged, demoralized, depleted, and depressed. Those in Jesus’ audience were no strangers to the oppressiveness of life. Jesus wanted to impress upon them that God’s Kingdom is nothing like the world, so that’s where we are to place our hope. If people mistreat you, or you find yourself burdened by our fallen world, turn your hope to the Lord and His promise for eternity. The Apostle Paul would later write these words, emphasizing that fact, “Jesus treated us much better than we deserve. He made us acceptable to God and gave us the hope of eternal life” (Titus 3:7 CEV). The richness of God’s forever promise gives you a value for life this world can never give; therefore, may that be your hope!
