Overcome // Romans 12:21

Is evil more powerful than good? Nope, not at all, but it tries to deceive us that it is. This is why we read in today’s verse that we overcome evil with good. How? Just like how we cast out darkness, with light. This is not to say that people will appreciate good works when they’re consumed with evil, but the dichotomy will reveal where allegiances lie. This is precisely why the two preceding verses read as they do: “Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: ‘It is mine to avenge; I will repay,’ says the Lord. On the contrary: ‘If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head’” (Romans 12:19-20, NIV). To put it plainly, it isn’t us that overcomes, but God and His grace. May we so live accordingly.
