Our Knocking Lord // Revelation 3:20

Today’s verse is one of my favorites. It comes in the section where the Lord was sending a stark message to the church at Laodicea. This is the same when Jesus said He would spit the lukewarm people out of His mouth, wishing they were either hot or cold. Jesus wants to come and visit, but He doesn’t just barge in uninvited. The apathy of the people likely meant they just lazily sat in their places, ignoring the knocking at the door. This would have been a big deal in their culture because of the importance of hospitality. So, we see that Jesus stands outside, waiting to be welcomed inside, while knocking at the door to your heart. What Jesus said next must not be overlooked: I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me.

Sharing a meal is a sign of reconciliation and fellowship. If relationship was broken, people often shared a meal together to communicate resolution. So, when Jesus said He wants to come in and eat — after saying He would spit out the apathetic — He is also offering another great blessing. He wants to come and help cool our jets if anger makes us hot or stoke our flames if life has dulled our spirits.

Whatever your condition that might have contributed to broken relationship, Jesus wants to help! He is standing at the door to your heart and knocking. Will you answer? Will you invite Him in? Will you allow Him to show you the sweetness of reconciliation? I pray so! Our knocking Lord is eager!
