New from Old // Isaiah 11:1

Isaiah 11:1 (NIV) | Out of the stump of David’s family will grow a shoot — yes, a new Branch bearing fruit from the old root.

Yesterday we looked at how Jesus fulfilled God’s promise to restore us for eternity. Today’s verse is another prophecy that indicated how the Messiah would come from the lineage of King David, which is true of Jesus. I like the visual we see about a new shoot coming from the old root. This gives us the idea that God is taking the old and doing something new. This is exactly what God does in us when we surrender our lives to Him and grant Jesus lordship over our lives. He takes the old and makes something brand new. Jesus talked about this and said we must be born again (John 3:3). The Apostle Paul further drove home the point in 2 Corinthians 5:17 when we read, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here” (NIV)! So, will you surrender your life to Jesus, the Messiah? He came to show us a new way to God that is available to everyone through the forgiveness of sin. Then, He makes us completely new, transforming our lives so now we can live for Him!
