National Kite-Flying Day // John 3:8
The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit. — John 3:8 (NIV)
Do you enjoy flying a kite? When was the last time you did? I enjoy kite-flying but admit it’s been quite a few years. I think we were at the beach the last time we flew a kite as a family. When you fly a kite, you quickly learn something important: you can’t control the wind. You can’t see it, but you know it’s there by the way it lifts the kite and carries it higher than you could ever throw it on your own. A kite doesn’t fly because of its own effort. It flies because it’s positioned to catch the wind. In the same way, our spiritual life grows when we place ourselves where the Spirit can move — through prayer, obedience, and trust.
Jesus used that same image when He talked about the Holy Spirit. God’s Spirit is unseen, unpredictable, and powerful. We may not always understand where the Spirit is leading, but when we trust Him — like holding onto the kite string — He lifts us, guides us, and keeps us moving in the right direction.
Are you trying to control the wind, or are you letting the Spirit lead? What would it look like today to loosen your grip on fear and trust God’s direction? Give it a shot on this National Kite-Flying Day and see where the Good Lord lifts and leads!
