Memorial Day // Deuteronomy 6:6-7

I hope you have plans for a blessed Memorial Day. Sure, it is known as the unofficial start of summer, but it is so much more that barbeques and swimming pools. Today is the day set aside for us to remember those who paid the ultimate sacrifice to protect and preserve our liberty. The passage I selected reminds us of all of the time when God was giving instructions to the Israelites at the end of their Exodus journey before they went to conquer the Promised Land. God told the people to remember what was done to get them to that point and make sure they teach the children the proper values so their freedom would continue to be protected and preserved. I often think about President Ronald Reagan’s statement that “Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn’t pass it to our children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected, and handed on for them to do the same…” My hope is we will all take time today to remember and recall how God delivers all from slavery to sin and death, as well as the ones who bravely gave of their lives in defense of our national liberty. Let’s take a moment today to orient all that we have and are to our perfect God who loves us perfectly!
