Maundy Thursday // John 6:51

Today is Maundy Thursday, the day we remember Jesus’ Last Supper. The word, Maundy, comes from the Latin word meaning, commandment. In essence, this points to Jesus telling the disciples to eat the bread and drink the wine as they remember Him. It is important for us to remember that the context of this statement comes from the celebration of the Passover meal. Their feast recounted the story of God delivering the Israelites out of slavery in Egypt and beginning their Exodus journey to the Promised Land. God miraculously fed the people along the way with manna from heaven. The manna was a flakey bread-like substance that settled on the ground. They were permitted to gather just enough for their family each day and the excess would spoil. The only exception was just before the sabbath then they were able to collect enough for two days. When Jesus said He was the living bread, He was pointing to the abundance of His nonperishable life. We can collect all we want and need in Jesus and it will never spoil! Feeding on Him and God’s Word is the essence of “you are what you eat,” because Jesus’ eternal nature infuses our bodies and preserves the soul forever. So, will you feed upon Jesus, whose nature is true food? He wants to knead you into a new creation, baste you will His love, and help you rise into eternal life beginning right now. Will you trust Him? Will you let Him?
