Magnifying Great Things // Luke 1:49
Yesterday we looked at how God planned, and accomplished, wonderful things for us that we must see in view of our past, present, and future. Today’s verse takes us to the New Testament to consider the great things God has done. Now, this verse specifically in Luke 1 comes from Mary’s Song as her response to the news that she would bear the Savior of the world. Can you imagine the stress and fear she must have experienced? There she was…an unwed pregnant teenager tasked with carrying and bearing the Son of God. She started her praise for God amidst all the conflicting emotions by saying, “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior” (Luke 1:46-47, NKJV). What strikes me about that is what Mary chose to magnify, or make larger in her life. Isn’t this something with which we all can struggle? If we choose to magnify the stress, it will get bigger and bigger, swamping us emotionally, physically, and spiritually. If we choose to magnify the Lord, though, everything else shrinks by comparison. So, if you want to see great things despite the craziness in the world, make sure your focus is on our great God. Take the time to praise God even in the struggle, because He is there to guide you and help prepare you for the glory of eternity. We are all going to magnify something in life, so best make it the One who stands above it all.
