Love and Devotion // Romans 12:10
Happy Valentine’s Day! This is the day we remember the death of Saint Valentine, who helped secretly provide for marriages for young lovers. This happened in the 3rd Century when the authorities were trying to make marriages illegal for young people. This was because the emperor felt that unmarried men made better soldiers. Valentine risked his life to help people devote their lives of love to another. This is something we are all called to do as we read in today’s verse. We are to put the needs of another ahead of our own, and in devotion, live a life of others. Love is the animating power that compels us to do what some might find unbelievable or impossible. It inspires people to climb mountains, cross oceans, and sacrifice personal whims and fancies to elevate another. So, on this day of love, make it about far more than chocolates, flowers, and cards. Yes, make it about choosing a life of devotion, service, and sacrifice. And why not decide to make this you M.O. for every day, and not just Valentine’s Day? It will change the world!
