Light Shines
John 1:5
Today’s verse is one of my most important life verses. I’ve seen this reality proved over and over again. I go through periods of darkness in my life, and sometimes it feels like they’ll never end. But they have; in one way or another, the light still shines. And the darkness doesn’t understand why. Despite its best efforts, darkness can’t overcome light. Various translations say that the darkness can’t put it out, comprehend it, apprehend it, overpower it, absorb it, extinguish it, suppress it, defeat it, grasp it, master it, quench it, or stop it. That’s quite a list of various translations all trying to say the same thing: light wins. Always. I liked the ☯️ symbol in my younger years, but I realized coming out of the oppressive grief following Mia’s death that light and dark are ultimately not in balance. It might feel like it at times, or that darkness gets the upper hand; in the end, though, light wins. It’s plain physics — one little spark expels darkness. Yes, the world is going through a period of darkness, but all it needs is light-bearers, Jesus followers shining like stars in the night sky. So let’s go shine. Let’s go be light in a dark and weary world. And as Jesus Himself said, when we do, we remind people that God is real and God is good. So let’s get after it, shall we?!
