In Step // Galatians 5:25
Galatians 5:25 (NIV) | Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.
Today’s verse comes after the Apostle Paul described the fruit of the Spirit being, “love, joy, peace, forbearance (meaning patience), kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.” The BIG idea being that these are the virtues the Holy Spirit helps cultivate and bloom in our lives. Paul closes that section with what we see as today’s verse by telling us we need to keep in step with the Spirit. I’m struck by this and it causes me to reflect on my childhood attempts at athleticism. I know this might come as a major shock to you, but I am not very fleet of foot. I always wanted to be fast and I even prayed for it. I had a couple friends who were very quick, though; one friend in particular would help me with my speed. He would take me by the hand and tell me to run with him. It was amazing…he was able to help me reach a pace when we ran together that I was seemingly incapable of reaching on my own. The irony is I had the physical capacity to run faster, but there was a mental block, so to speak. My friend helped me overcome that when we ran together. This is in a way what the Spirit helps us with. The Spirit works within us to help us achieve the things that can only come with help…and godly help at that! So, with whatever comes your way with the steps you must take, know you do not take them alone. God is in you and wants to help you move at a pace, and in a peace, that only He can provide!
