Hosanna! // John 12:13
Today is Palm Sunday, the time we commemorate Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem. He rode into town on a donkey to symbolize how He came as a King in peace. The people laid their coats on the ground and waved palm branches in celebration shouting, “Hosanna! Blessed in the one who comes in the name of the Lord! Blessed is the King of Israel!” I want to reiterate that the meaning of Jesus’ name is, God saves, or more accurately, Yahweh saves. As the people were shouting their praises, they were declaring that Jesus is the One who came in God’s name. Hosanna isn’t just a word of praise, though, because it also means, save us now! Those who gathered were praising the One they hoped would save them from the Roman occupation of the day while praising Him at the same time. The friction came when they realized Jesus’ mission didn’t meet their expectations; so, their cheers turned to jeers in just a matter of days. We might be tempted to do the same when God’s deliverance comes in a different way from what we prefer. You can be assured, though, that God’s way is the best way! So, as we enter into this Holy Week, may we do so with our prayers and praises aligned with God’s will. Jesus came to save us and He deserves our praise. May our personal expectations not get in the way of what God has in store for us all.
