God’s Comfort // Psalm 23:4
Millie dog is a bit of a coward. It makes me laugh to see the things that frighten her. She does one of two things whenever she’s scared: she runs away or runs to me…sometimes both. We were out on a walk through the neighborhood the other day and it was obvious that she DESPISES Halloween yard decorations. I snapped the pic I used for our Scripture graphic, but it doesn’t quite do that moment justice. She saw this well decorated home and immediately went into 4-leg-drive. She began pulling me as though we were doing the Dallas Iditarod. When she realized she wasn’t going to be able to pull me faster than I could walk, she came back to me and got as close as she could. I found myself simultaneously humored and moved by that one moment. As I did, Psalm 23:4 leapt into my consciousness, “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.”
We face all kinds of terrifying things, don’t we? Things that cause us to want to run and flee, but so many are inescapable. What are we to do? Know we do not traverse those valleys alone. No, God is with us to guide us and protect us; not just that, though, because He is also there to comfort you. So, if you feel terrified by the things you cannot escape, know none of them can stand in the face of our Almighty God!
