God with Us to Save Us // Isaiah 7:14
Isaiah 7:14 (NIV) | Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.
Today’s verse is a pretty well-known prophecy of Jesus’ birth. It points to the virgin birth of Jesus. Some scoff that the notion, but that is precisely how Jesus was born without sin and was able to remain sinless throughout His earthly life. Then, we see how the child will be called, Immanuel, which means, God with us. Matthew 1:22 is a callback to Isaiah 7:14 as it connected the events surrounding Christ’s conception and birth as the Promised One…the One we know as Jesus, which Matthew 1:21 tells us means He will save His people from their sins. And therein lies God’s purpose in sending Jesus: to come and restore the relationship for which we were always intended but was marred by the stain of sin. So, Jesus came to be God with us and save us from that which separates us from Him, our sins. It was a task so great only God could accomplish, and so grand all we can do is accept it in love. Will you?
