God is Good // 1 Chronicles 16:34

By Mark Jordan

God is good. This doesn’t mean that everything we encounter is good, but God is good. One of the common critiques about a life of faith is how can a good God allow bad things to happen. Has that ever vexed you? It does me, especially when we see evil visited upon the innocent, say, like school children. One of the key aspects of a life with God is how we are given free will to make decisions for ourselves. Sometimes we make good decisions. Sometimes we make poor ones. This does not change how good God is, though. If you read on into verse 35 you’ll see that the declaration of God being good is followed up with a plea to save. That right there proves that God is good even when our circumstances are not. As 1 Chronicles 16 unfolds, we read that the next choice we’re given is to praise God. So, we see this progression: an acknowledgement that God is good, we will encounter things from which we need to be saved, yet we are to praise God regardless. Turning our problems into praises can remind us that God is good and is with us even when what we face is not good. May this help us tackle today and everything we must face in faith, hope, and love.
