Get Down as the Praises Go Up // 2 Samuel 6:22
Today is Dance Marathon Day. I’m not much of a dancer, but I will definitely get my groove on when I hear one of my favorite songs. I’ve embarrassed my family more than once by dancing in public, but I’m pretty sure that’s part of the dad job description. Dancing is joyful and celebratory, which is why it appears in cultures all throughout history. One of my favorite stories in the Bible comes from 2 Samuel 6. King David was celebrating the return of the Ark when he danced with such enthusiasm that his clothes started slipping off! Michal, the daughter of former King Saul, criticized him for looking undignified. But David responded, “I will become even more undignified than this, and I will be humiliated in my own eyes” (2 Samuel 6:22). In other words, if wholehearted praise made him look foolish, he was willing to look even more so for the Lord. That’s a good reminder for Dance Marathon Day. We need the fun and movement in our lives, but we also need the joy that comes from praising God with our whole hearts. So go ahead—get down by lifting up the name of the Lord and celebrating Him, even if others might think you look a little foolish.
