Fret > Suspicion > Worry // Matthew 6:27
When was the last time you fretted that something was true, suspected it for a while, and then had it confirmed? How did it make you feel? That happened to me the other day. I was pretty sure I knew something to be true, but I was unable to get it confirmed for myself. Fast forward six months or so and I learned my suspicions we correct. Was I relieved? Nope; in fact, the unresolved angst of some six months flooded in at one moment. It was horrible.
Admittedly, this wasn’t a one-off experience for me. I see it happen over and over again. So what did I do this time? I prayed. I asked God for peace and prayed for forgiveness that I allowed something in the past to disturb my present. I am pretty sure God gave me a gift in the words of today’s verse: “Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to your life?” Those words from Jesus are so powerful, aren’t they? Worrying cannot add another hour to my life any more than it can recover the last six months.
There is wisdom here for all of us. Don’t allow your worried suspicions rob you of today — or tomorrow! — when you realize what happened in the past whether it was yesterday or many yesterdays. Trust God who exists outside of time to simultaneously hold you in your past, present, and future. The Lord is there and longs to keep you at peace…a gift that only Jesus can give.
