For National Oreo Cookie Day // Psalm 19:10b-11

This is a day I need to add to my calendar. It is National Oreo Cookie Day! Did you know there is such a thing? It isn’t just milk’s favorite cookie, it is Mark’s favorite cookie! I love the sweet chocolaty flavor, the crunch of the cookie, and the velvety texture of the cream. I love Oreos.

It’s worth considering how I say I love Oreos. I mean I do, but not anywhere near how I love my church, my family, my God. The things that truly deserve a place of honor in my heart point me to what it means to love God with all I am and have, and to love others as I love myself. In other words, how I am called to live into, and out of, God’s love.

Psalm 19:10b-11 says, “They are sweeter than honey—even dripping off the honeycomb! No doubt about it: your servant is enlightened by them; there is great reward in keeping them.” Honey was one of the more common sweeteners in biblical times. I would not go as far as to say that King David (who wrote Psalm 19) might have used an Oreo as opposed to honey if he were to write today, but the fact that Oreos are the #1 selling cookies, are good alone or in other dishes, and can be eaten in many unique ways, the versatility alone might be worth some consideration (only in partial jest, you understand). There are all kinds of generic imitators, but you know there’s nothing like the real thing. King David was using the sweetness of honey as a way to describe God’s words in this Psalm. It is important to note that he was including things like the warm, loving words, as well as the stern, warning words. From promises to prohibitions, God’s words are to be savored and stored in one’s head and hart. They are rewards in-and-of-themselves, as well as pointing us to our eternal reward in heaven.

Regardless how you plan to observe this National Oreo Cookie Day, I pray you do so with a mind to the words of God. May they help you taste and see that the Lord is good and keep you away from the things that are not. In hard times and smooth times alike, may God’s Word keep you secure in the sweetness of His love.
