For Flag Day // Psalm 108:3-6
“I’m thanking you, God, out in the streets, singing your praises in town and country? The deeper your love, the higher it goes; every cloud’s a flag to your faithfulness. Soar high in the skies, O God! Cover the whole earth with your glory! And for the sake of the one you love so much, reach down and help me—answer me!” (Psalm 108:3-6, MSG)
Today is Flag Day, the day we remember that the Continental Congress in 1777 adopted the plan to establish a common flag. This was useful for General George Washington who rallied and led his soldiers into battle under the common banner. The various militias and regiments used their own flags up until that point, but there was a desire for a singular flag to fly showing the young fledgling nation’s unity in the battle for liberty. Flag Day was later established by President Wilson as an official holiday in 1916.
I love how today’s passage reminds us we are all united under God’s glory. The beautiful imagery rendered in The Message Version of this King David Psalm mentions how the clouds in the sky serve as a flag to God’s faithfulness. Clouds are ubiquitous in creation, yet specifically depict the promises, presence, and power of God throughout Scripture. God placed a rainbow in the clouds after the flood. He led the Hebrews via a cloud during the exodus journey. Jesus promised to return descending on a cloud. All of these ideas are to rally us together for a common cause, point others to the Lord, and prove God’s unending love for all His children.
I am praying today that God’s glory will indeed cover all the earth. Will you join me? He truly loves all His children and longs to answer those who call on His holy name. So let’s come together unified in God’s amazing grace. Let’s rally and promote His holy cause. And may we participate in God’s glory by helping draw all people into His holy presence.
