Finish Strong // 2 Timothy 4:7-8
Today is Finisher’s Medal Day, a time set aside for those who train for, and run in, a marathon. This isn’t about times or rankings but setting out for an arduous task and completing it despite the odds. I immediately think of what Paul wrote in 2 Timothy 4:7-8, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, and I have remained faithful. And now the prize awaits me—the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give me on the day of his return. And the prize is not just for me but for all who eagerly look forward to his appearing” (NLT). I think a key part of this passage is found when Paul wrote that he remained faithful. It’s tempting to get off course and quit when things don’t go our way, but we come to realize there is benefit in the struggle. We might not qualify for the Olympics, or even place in a local marathon, but God’s desire is for us to run and finish strong. It is then that we’ll find the prize isn’t a medal that will be lost or tarnished, but a crown of righteousness for the finisher, as well as everyone who looks forward to His blessed and promised return. So, find a steady pace, know there will be obstacles, commit, and finish strong.
