Don’t Fall Away // Hebrews 6:10

Today’s verse comes in a section of the Book of Hebrews that deals with spiritual maturity. It points to a reality most of us have experienced at one point in life or another. We know that we need the wholeness of the disciplined Christian life (worship, fellowship, outreach, and service with all those entail) but one or more areas can easily get out of balance. There are as many reasons as there are people for why that happens. As a result, the writer of Hebrews cautions against falling away. The advice we read is to know that those are the times to develop perseverance. When you wonder or worry if there is any benefit to the things you’re doing in the church, the answer is always yes…even if the benefit is to remind you it’s not about you. Ouch, I know. There should be a comfort convergence (as we discussed yesterday) in knowing that God comes alongside you in the tough times we face so we can also connect with another. The goodness and justice of God ensures that the Lord is mindful of what you do in Jesus’ name. So, if you find yourself falling, or even just pulling away, take a personal inventory. Reflect on what you are feeling and how God might be leading. Has your focus shifted from God and others to self? Are you worshipping, praying, serving, giving, studying, and playing with other believers? Is God trying to deepen your discipline and develop your character? It all has a purpose, so believe it and live it…even when it might feel tiresome. God is NOT overlooking a thing, and as the Good Book affirms, “you will not become spiritually dull and indifferent. Instead, you will follow the example of those who are going to inherit God’s promises because of their faith and endurance” (Hebrews 6:12).
