Do You Believe This? // John 11:25-26

Oh, how I have come to love this verse! The context is Jesus’ friend, Lazarus, recently died. He went to the family gathering and was met with Lazarus’ sisters’ grief-filled anger when they both suggested separately that if He was there, Lazarus wouldn’t have died. Jesus redirected their heartbreak to hope. They confessed they believed in Jesus and how God the Father would give Him whatever He asked. Jesus turned it around again and said the words we read in today’s verse, that He is the resurrection and the life. What strikes me is how He followed up that statement with a question, asking if they believed Him. Jesus did not just want them paying lip service, but really believing it to the point where they were willing to stake their life to it. He made it personal. He made it direct. He made it real. There are times we all need to hear Jesus ask us the same question: “Do you believe this?” Well, do you? Have you just paid lip service to faith in the past? Will you stake your life to the truth and hold fast to the promise? We celebrate our Lord’s Day on Sunday as a celebration of Easter and Jesus’ Resurrection. Today is our chance to live once again into the rhythm showing our belief that Jesus IS resurrection and life. So, do you believe this…I mean really believe it? If you do, then live like it. Amen, and let’s go!
