Delights // Psalm 37:4

In what do you delight? I can think of several things. I can also think of several things I want to delight in, but that collision between expectation and reality leaves me empty; take, for example, the Braves long World Series Champions winning streak. Ouch! too soon? So how do we square the disappointments that come with the delights we desire, especially when we read a verse like today’s? The simplest — not easiest — way to explain it comes down to what we desire. Note that Psalm 37:4 says God gives us our heart’s desires when we desire God. In other words, when our heart first desires God, then we will find that longing fulfilled. Consider Jeremiah 29:13, “You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart” (NIV). So, messages like these reveal to us that we need to desire God and He transforms the desires of the heart. That’s not to say we won’t be able to enjoy things like World Series Championships, but what it does mean is we will put, and keep, those things in their proper perspective. I think Jesus said it best in Matthew 6:33, “Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need” (NLT).
