Declare! // Psalm 19:1

Today’s verse is a declaration that God’s creation reveals God’s nature…the vast and indescribable beauty, power, majesty, mystery, all of it. This verse comes from one of King David’s psalms. David knew about the grandeur of nature from his time as a shepherd, a warrior, seeker, and worshipper. The Apostle Paul later wrote in Romans 1:20 that God’s revelation through nature leaves those who do not know Him without an excuse. The Good Book also serves a warning about those who worship creation apart from the Creator, which is something we see all too often. Deuteronomy 4:19 conveys, “And when you look up into the sky and see the sun, moon, and stars—all the forces of heaven—don’t be seduced into worshiping them. The Lord your God gave them to all the peoples of the earth.” Nature serves to declare the goodness of the Creator beyond the goodness of the creation. All the sights, sounds, scents, tastes, and feelings are real, but they exist to point us from the gifts to the Giver. Nature declares that we don’t exist by some happy accident, but as part of plan to embrace the raw creativity and irrefutable awe of the One who spins our entire universe into motion. So next time you’re standing in creation with your mouth agape at the beauty, sense how it points you to the God who gives it as a gift. Then, don’t just focus what was given, but the Giver who dreamt it all, including you. All of it is there to point us to God, so go all the way and declare the unbelievable works of His unmistakable hand.
