Comfort for the Mourning // Matthew 5:4

Bereaved Mothers Day is always the first Sunday in May. As the world is busy prepping for Mother’s Day, our inboxes, screens, and messages offer us important reminders about celebrating our moms. Even though times like this are beautiful, think about how devastating this season is for mothers grieving a child they never got to hold, or once held and can no longer. International Bereaved Mother’s Day is a day for moms who have lost their children to share about all they may have endured. Women grieving for children are mothers too — even if their babies are no longer with them — and need to feel their grief so they can place it in the arms of God. Jesus said in Matthew 5:4 that “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.” A major component of this is giving and receiving the space to grieve. We tend to shy away from grief and the grieving in our modern culture, which can be a shame. We all need to feel our feelings and process them properly; otherwise, they end up controlling us. So, on this Bereaved Mothers Day, allow someone who is grieving the loss of a child the space to feel what they feel. This is a comforting gift, and your giving it can help keep the memory of a loved one lost alive.
