Blessed Are the Meek // Matthew 5:5
Jesus said the meek will inherit the earth. Unfortunately, too many people equate meekness with weakness, but that could not be farther from the truth. Meekness is not weakness, but strength under control. That strength isn’t even your own strength, but the power God infuses you with when you accept Jesus as Lord of your life. I love how The Message Version renders this verse: “You’re blessed when you’re content with just who you are—no more, no less. That’s the moment you find yourselves proud owners of everything that can’t be bought.” Consider how meekness should now be viewed as a comfortable confidence in who you are. In order to achieve the kind of strength that makes you meek, you must embrace who you are in the Lord. Contained in that contentment is the reality that you are exactly the amazing creature God created. Of course, God wants to work to transform you, but even in that, God wants you to develop a sense of confidence that you are exactly who God wants you to be. We run into problems, though, when we neglect the transforming power of the Gospel and think we are sufficient unto ourselves for salvation. Check out 1 Corinthians 10:12, “Forget about self-confidence; it’s useless. Cultivate God-confidence” (MSG). God wants you to develop confidence in Him that He is with you and for you. This God-confidence is priceless, but it cannot be bought. Thank the Lord Jesus gave His life on the cross so you and I could be purchased and delivered into God’s powerful and perpetual presence!
