Believing is Seeing // Jeremiah 17:7
Today’s passage must be read in context to get the full impact. Verse 5 says, “Cursed is the one who trusts in man, who draws strength from mere flesh and whose heart turns away from the Lord.” God spoke these words to Jeremiah and affirmed our human inclination to trust things we can experience things with our five senses. God wants us to trust Him, which comes down to faith. Hebrews 11:1 describes faith as “confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.” We need to invert our human tendencies where we tend say seeing is believing yet need to know that believing is seeing. As CS Lewis wrote, “I believe in Christianity as I believe that the sun has risen: not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else.”
