Be… // Mark 13:33

Mark 13:33 (NIV) | Be on guard! Be alert! You do not know when that time will come.

Today’s verse comes in a section where Jesus taught about His return. He told Peter, James, John, and Andrew about what to look for in advance of the end times and to stay vigilant because no one knows when it will be. I think this points to an aspect of our human nature where we can get lazy waiting on something we have no idea when it will occur or even begin to lose faith that it will. Jesus’ answer to those, and other quandaries, is to stay engaged, even if the engagement is to be still and know that God is God (Psalm 46:10). So, if you’re feeling like giving in because things aren’t going as — or when — expected, be still and know God is God. Then, be on guard against the attacks and deceptions of the evil one. Then, be alert because you have no idea when Jesus will return, and you want to be ready to point others to Him, too.
