April Fool’s Day // Proverbs 26:4

Well, here we are again…April Fool’s Day. I can’t say I’m a fan because I’m gullible. Interestingly enough, the Bible has a lot of warnings against fools and foolishness. Proverbs 26:4 says, “Don’t respond to the stupidity of a fool; you’ll only look foolish yourself” (MSG). The Bible portrays fools as those who are empty-headed, unwise, immoral, and prideful. We see this kind of thing a lot in this day and age when people who have expertise in one area believe they are experts in every area (the Dunning-Kruger effect). Think about some of the ridiculous things celebrities say because they have reached a certain level of success. Just because an actor played a doctor on TV does not mean I want that person performing surgery on me. There is a famous Mark Twain quote I want to leave you with today, “It is better to keep your mouth closed and let people think you are a fool than to open it and remove all doubt.” So, why not take that approach with the wisdom from Proverbs 26:4 into this day when people will be playing all kinds of pranks and preying on the gullible? Don’t respond in kind, because if you do, you’ll reveal the identity of the true fool.
