Luke Chapter 14: Advent
Luke 14 begins with Jesus entering the proverbial lion’s den by dining with a leader of the Pharisees. He broaches the subject of healing on the Sabbath again to reveal God’s desire for compassion over a strict adherence to rules. Jesus then gives a teaching on humility and offers a reality check on what it means to follow God as a disciple. This likely provided a gut-check for those following Jesus, and probably caused some heartburn for His opponents.
As you read today, pay attention to the setting of chapter 14. The events in the entire chapter took place around a dining table. Think about how some of your conversations go around a meal. Jesus’ words were sweet for some to hear and bitter for others, but it was all truth. What arewe to do with such truth?

Prayer: Dear Lord, I see the cost of discipleship is high. Forgive me for recognizing that but seeing it as loss. I know your Word tells me that to live for you is gain. Help me to follow and represent you wherever I go and with whomever I meet. I ask this in your holy name. Amen.
